What Does a Fish Necklace Mean in Christianity?
Share
If you have ever seen a little fish on the back of a car, a necklace or a coffee mug, you have seen one of the oldest Christian symbols in the world. It is simple, it is sweet, and it carries so much meaning. Here is the story behind it, and why I love wearing it.
Where the Christian fish symbol comes from
The fish symbol is called the ichthys, the Greek word for fish. Early Christians noticed that its letters spell out a short statement of faith: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter, which means Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.
In the first centuries after Jesus, following Him could be dangerous. Many believers used the fish as a quiet sign to recognize one another and to mark places where they gathered. A simple drawing of two curved lines became a way of saying, "You are not alone. I believe too."
The fish all through the Gospels
Fish show up again and again in the life of Jesus, and each moment is a little reminder of who He is:
- Fishers of men. When Jesus called Peter and Andrew, He told them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19, KJV).
- Five loaves and two fish. With a small lunch, Jesus fed thousands, and there was more than enough left over (Matthew 14:17 to 21).
- Breakfast on the shore. After His resurrection, Jesus cooked fish for His friends by the sea (John 21:9 to 13).

What a fish necklace means today
Wearing a fish necklace is a gentle way to share your faith without saying a word. For some women it is a reminder that God provides, just like He did with the loaves and fish. For others it is a reminder to follow Jesus every day, or a way to start a conversation with someone who asks, "What does your necklace mean?"
It also makes a beautiful gift for a baptism, a confirmation, a new believer or a friend walking through a hard season.
Our fish inspired pieces
I designed a few pieces around this symbol because it means so much to me:
- The Provision Necklace, a dainty fish pendant inspired by the five loaves and two fish. A daily reminder that God always provides.
- Faithful Fish Earrings, tiny textured fish studs you can wear every single day.
- Follow Me Bracelet, a sweet reminder of His invitation to follow Him, and a lovely baptism gift.
Every piece is 18K PVD gold plated, waterproof, tarnish resistant and gentle on sensitive skin, so your reminder can stay with you in the shower, at the beach and every day in between.
I hope the next time you see a little fish, you remember that you are seen, you are provided for and you are never alone.
