Is PVD Gold Plated Jewelry Waterproof?
"Can I shower with it?" is the number one question I get, so let's talk about it! The short answer is yes. Our jewelry is made to be lived in. Here is what PVD gold plating is, why it holds up so well, and how to keep your pieces shining for years.
What is PVD gold plating?
PVD stands for physical vapor deposition. Instead of dipping jewelry into a gold bath like traditional plating, PVD bonds a thin layer of gold to the metal inside a vacuum chamber. The result is a finish that is much harder and more durable than regular gold plating.
At Arrows, most of our pieces are 18K PVD gold plated over stainless steel. Stainless steel does not rust, so the base of your jewelry stays strong too.
So, is it waterproof?
Yes. You can wear your PVD gold plated pieces in the shower, at the pool, at the beach and at the gym. Water will not ruin them or turn your skin green.
Like anything you love and wear often, a little care makes them last even longer:
- Rinse with fresh water after salt water or chlorine and pat dry.
- Put on lotion, perfume and sunscreen before your jewelry.
- Store each piece on its own so they do not scratch each other.
- Skip harsh cleaners. A soft cloth is all you need.
Gold plated, gold filled or solid gold?
- Traditional gold plated: a very thin layer of gold that can fade quickly, especially with water.
- PVD gold plated: a stronger, bonded layer that is waterproof and tarnish resistant, at an affordable price. This is what we use.
- Gold filled: a thicker layer of gold pressed onto another metal, durable but more expensive.
- Solid gold: gold all the way through, beautiful and lasting, and the most expensive option.
